Dark Wolf

Copyright 1983 by Colin Glassey

Dark Wolf stalks round the lit house
Teeth glint like jagged shapes out of an ice fed lake
Night is uneasy, an ill omened wind scares leaves.

Two humans cling before a fire
Their bodies fix flickering shadows at which they do not look.
Like a black-edged letter, dire wolf stands before the door

The last spark of fire leaves up the chimney,
As water flows into an ocean the two hide inside the bed.
In sleep she calls a strange name, he is awake and hears it.

Wolf is night inside the house
Wolf is eyes red with desire
Wolf moans the way a woman might in the arms of another man.

He hears the wolf's call but can't wake
She hears and it echoes in her dream of her other lover.
Someday the night will end
Dark wolf
